Winter season brings along lot of Health problems. Every year experts are worried about the increase in cases of Stroke during winters When temperatures decreases, the incidence of stroke rises in older age group, although young adults are also affected.

Is it possible to prevent stroke? it is the most important question among people. To find out information about stroke, our Health reporter interviewed Senior Neuro-Surgeon Dr R Gupta.

HEALTH REPORTER – Brain is an important part of the Body. Many Neuro problems does affect people but if we talk about stroke, what is this condition and what are the symptoms ?

DR. R GUPTA (SENIOR NEURO – SURGEON)- As a stroke Expert we always advice people to take certain precautions in winters to prevent stroke. Stroke can be ischemic (85%) or haemorrhagic(15%).

to identify the person with Ischemic stroke, the person may have loss of power in limbs or one side of face, loss of speech or vision, imbalance and dizziness or unconsciousness.

in case of Haemorrhagic stroke, the person may have sudden severe headache with vomiting or seizure, limb weakness and unconsciousness.

Stroke is a medical emergency, so if person have these symptoms, just rush to nearby hospital immediately. and always remember, both types of stroke are very common in winters.

DR. R GUPTA (SENIOR NEURO – SURGEON)- Stroke is mainly a lifestyle disease. to reduce the risk of stroke certain lifestyle modification should be incorporated in daily routine.

Ischemic stroke is due to long term hypertension, diabetes, cardiac disease and atherosclerosis. So if a person follow certain measures like regular exercise, plenty of fluid intake, healthy diet, adequate sound sleep, control of stress and chronic illnesses, stroke can be prevented. In winters, plenty of warm fluids, healthy diet and control of BP are important.

Always remember, Haemorrhagic stroke is mainly due to high blood pressure. Strict control of blood pressure is most important. Apart from that regular exercise, healthy diet, adequate sleep and control of chronic illnesses are important. Stress is also an important factor in haemorrhagic stroke.

In winters all the people should take extra precautions and at the same time patients must take Medicines as prescribed by doctors and should not miss any dose. Diabetes and Blood Pressure patient must take extra precautions during winter months.
